Ikuna vs SnapBack

Bring back the project tabs, not only the window layout.

SnapBack saves app/window layouts across displays and reopens closed apps. Its free tier includes unlimited named workspaces; Pro adds configured URL/folder/command launchers, custom layouts and an in-app grouping feature called Spaces. Choose Ikuna when switching projects means reopening a saved browser tab list with your windows and adding workspace-linked focus tools. Choose SnapBack when free unlimited window layouts and snapping cover what you need.

Where Ikuna has the advantage

Capture the tabs that belong to the project

Ikuna saves the tab list in supported browser windows alongside apps and window geometry. Restore reopens those saved URLs, not arbitrary browser memory, logged-in sessions or unsaved page state. SnapBack Pro can launch URLs you configure, so the distinction is captured tab lists versus configured launch actions.

A focus layer attached to the workspace

Basic focus dashboard free; Pro adds full Focus Intelligence, Focus Shield and Rituals. If you want to reopen a research or client setup and use focus controls in the same app, this is the reason to evaluate Ikuna beyond layout recall. Ikuna does not integrate with macOS Focus Modes.

Where SnapBack has the advantage

Free unlimited saved layouts

SnapBack includes snapping, named workspaces, layout restoration, app reopening and multi-display support for free. If that solves your problem, you do not need a subscription for those features.

Pay once for launch automation and layout tools

Pro is listed at $9.99 one-time. It adds configured URL/folder/terminal-command launchers, a command palette, custom layouts and workspace grouping. Do not mistake these groups for native macOS Spaces.

The bottom line

Choose Ikuna when switching projects means reopening a saved browser tab list with your windows and adding workspace-linked focus tools. Choose SnapBack when free unlimited window layouts and snapping cover what you need. Try SnapBack Free first if you only need layout recall. Test Ikuna Free with a real project if you keep rebuilding the tabs inside those windows.

Frequently asked questions

When is Ikuna a better fit than SnapBack?

Choose Ikuna when switching projects means reopening a saved browser tab list with your windows and adding workspace-linked focus tools. Choose SnapBack when free unlimited window layouts and snapping cover what you need.

Does restore include browser tabs?

Safari, supported Chromium browsers and Firefox; restore reopens saved URLs, not arbitrary browser memory or unsaved page state. Pro can launch configured URLs; automatic capture of a live browser tab list not established. Chromium profiles are assigned manually per browser window in the workspace editor; automatic profile detection is not promised.

What should I check in SnapBack before switching?

SnapBack Pro can open URLs and run commands on restore. That is useful automation, but the reviewed guide does not establish automatic capture of every open browser tab. Its Help Center explicitly says it does not integrate directly with macOS Spaces; Pro Spaces are groups inside SnapBack, not Mission Control desktops.

Does Ikuna restore native macOS Spaces?

Current source includes native-Space restoration; signed-release behavior not verified in this review. Test your installed version and required apps before relying on desktop placement.

What happens after a restart?

Saved workspaces survive restarts: turn on Start at Login, then one click reopens your apps and puts their windows back. There is no crash recovery. Restoration depends on supported apps, permissions and available saved resources. It does not recover unsaved documents, running Terminal processes or arbitrary shell state. Ikuna needs Accessibility and asks to control the apps it restores.
