Where Ikuna has the advantage

Capture the tabs that belong to the project

Ikuna saves the tab list in supported browser windows alongside apps and window geometry. Restore reopens those saved URLs, not arbitrary browser memory, logged-in sessions or unsaved page state. Mac Workspaces documents which apps, Spaces and positions it saves; that is not evidence of capturing the URLs inside a browser window.

A focus layer attached to the workspace

Basic focus dashboard free; Pro adds full Focus Intelligence, Focus Shield and Rituals. If you want to reopen a research or client setup and use focus controls in the same app, this is the reason to evaluate Ikuna beyond layout recall. Ikuna does not integrate with macOS Focus Modes.

Where Mac Workspaces has the advantage

Native desktop placement and login restore

Mac Workspaces advertises placing apps on saved native Spaces, creating missing desktops and automatically restoring a chosen login profile. Ikuna source includes native-Space restoration, but signed-release behavior has not been verified in this review; do not buy it on an assumed Spaces advantage.

One-time license with snapping included

The displayed price is $18.99, with a standard license for up to two Macs and a 7-day fully unlocked trial. Sixteen snap zones are included. It is a lower-commitment choice if desktop layout is all you need.

The bottom line

Choose Ikuna when the project needs its saved browser tabs as well as arranged windows, with a workspace-linked focus layer. Choose Mac Workspaces when native desktop placement, login auto-restore and a one-time license are your priority. Use the Mac Workspaces trial for a layout spread across desktops. Use Ikuna Free for a project whose browser content matters as much as placement.

Frequently asked questions

When is Ikuna a better fit than Mac Workspaces?

Choose Ikuna when the project needs its saved browser tabs as well as arranged windows, with a workspace-linked focus layer. Choose Mac Workspaces when native desktop placement, login auto-restore and a one-time license are your priority.

Does restore include browser tabs?

Safari, supported Chromium browsers and Firefox; restore reopens saved URLs, not arbitrary browser memory or unsaved page state. Profile documentation lists apps, Spaces and geometry; automatic browser-tab capture not established. Chromium profiles are assigned manually per browser window in the workspace editor; automatic profile detection is not promised.

What should I check in Mac Workspaces before switching?

The FAQ documents full-screen and slow-launching app limits, requires Displays have separate Spaces, and says display disconnection does not currently auto-restore a built-in-display profile. Its terms disclose private macOS APIs whose behavior can change with OS updates. These are documented limits, not failures observed in an app test.

Does Ikuna restore native macOS Spaces?

Current source includes native-Space restoration; signed-release behavior not verified in this review. Test your installed version and required apps before relying on desktop placement.

What happens after a restart?

Saved workspaces survive restarts: turn on Start at Login, then one click reopens your apps and puts their windows back. There is no crash recovery. Restoration depends on supported apps, permissions and available saved resources. It does not recover unsaved documents, running Terminal processes or arbitrary shell state. Ikuna needs Accessibility and asks to control the apps it restores.

How was this comparison checked?

We build Ikuna. Official product pages, documentation and privacy policies were reviewed on 4 November 2026. Neither competitor was independently app-tested or benchmarked. Vendor claims are attributed, and undocumented features are not treated as proven absences. Prices are displayed vendor prices, not tax-inclusive checkout quotes.
